1000 Books Before Kindergarten.
1000
Books Before Kindergarten is an self-guided, ongoing program for all
children, from birth up until they start school, with the goal of encouraging
every child to read at least 1000 books before kindergarten. Any book your child
hears counts toward their program goal, including coming to story time at the
library and books that you have read before, so children can begin this program
at any age and easily meet their goal!
The launch party for this program will take place at the Main Library
on Wednesday, August 20th at 11am. Join our Youth Services
Department staff for stories, tips on how to succeed in helping your child meet
his or her reading goals, and to learn more about how the program works.
Families will also take home a booklet to track each child's progress!
For
more information, please call the Youth Services Department at 508.830.4250, or
check us out at www.plymouthpubliclibrary.org.
The library is fully accessible; let us know if you need special accommodation
to attend.

Great White Shark Encounter off Manomet Point
On Wednesday, September 3, 2014, the Town of Plymouth received multiple 911 calls reporting two kayakers in distress in the area off Manomet Point. While en-route to the location Plymouth Police updated the Harbormaster Department that another kayaker had paddled out to help the kayakers in distress and was with them awaiting the arrival of Plymouth Police. Plymouth Harbormaster and Plymouth Fire arrived on-scene and quickly removed the two persons in the water. Both individuals were seriously frightened, but otherwise unharmed. The third kayaker paddled back to shore. The kayaks were then retrieved from the water and a large shark bite was noticed on the bottom of the kayak. Shortly thereafter, the Division of Marine Fisheries, John Chisholm, examined the bite mark and confirmed it to be from a great white shark.
The Harbormaster Department along with the Massachusetts Environmental Police will continue patrols in the area for any shark sightings. The Town of Plymouth is taking cautionary measures by posting Plymouth Long Beach, White Horse Beach, and beach areas along Stephen’s Field and Nelson Park are closed to swimmers. We are strongly advising that people do not go swimming because of this sighting and shark activity in the area. If beach patrons choose to swim, they may do so at their own risk with the understanding that if they choose to enter the water, they should do so cautiously and avoid going into the water beyond waist depth.
Our goal is to always provide safe and appropriate access to beach patrons, answer your questions or address any concerns you may have. Please do not hesitate to contact the Harbormaster’s staff either onsite at the beach or via phone using the contact information provided herein.

Water Street Road Temporary Closure
Water Street Road Temporary Closure
Bridge Construction starting on September 2, 2014
The
Town of Plymouth’s Department of Public Works would like to announce Northern
Construction Service will commence construction work to replace the Water
Street Bridge on Water Street between Union Street and Leyden Street starting
on September 2, 2014.
This
work requires that the section of Water Street between Union Street and Leyden
Street be temporarily closed to all traffic. The project is expected to begin
September 2, 2014 and we anticipate the road will be reopened to traffic by the
middle of November 2014.
The Town and the Contractor will make every effort to
minimize disturbances to residents, businesses, pedestrians and motorists in
the downtown waterfront area throughout the duration of this project. If you
have any questions or would like more information on this project, please
