Regions of Wonder

Saturday, April 2, 2016  8PM

Memorial Hall, Plymouth

BRAHMS Symphony No.3

VAUGHAN WILLIAMS Toward the Unknown Region
RUTTER Gloria
Brahm's emotional reflections ignited this beautiful 3rd Symphony whose movements seem to be "of one piece, one beat of the heart."  No need to think, simply be, as we yield to the pull and undertow of these emotionally sweeping pieces.  With the voices of the 2016 High School Choral Consortium guiding the way, we'll journey Toward the Unknown Region, an English work inspired by the American Walt Whitman poem Darest thou now O Soul, where All waits undream'd of in that region, that inaccessible land.  Our 100-voice choral assembly of high school students from Duxbury, Marshfield, Pembroke, Plymouth, Scituate and Silver Lake Regional combine to catapult our joyous finale.  Bursting with resounding energy, Rutter's Gloria exalts and lifts the musical spirit until it soars!

Finding Jane Goodwin Austin A 19th-Century Novelist's Legacy on Burial Hill

Date: April 2, 2016

Local guide Joyce Poremski offers an intriguing view of once famous 19th-century novelist, Jane Goodwin Austin, who fictionalized the histories of Plymouth families including the Standishes and the LeBarons.

Finding Jane Goodwin Austin is part of Burial Hill: History in Progress, a free program that will continue through the year 2020. Launched independently in 2011 by the Plymouth Antiquarian Society, the Burial Hill series is now a collaborative program with the Pilgrim Society & Pilgrim Hall Museum. Each year, we will present a series of history expeditions on Burial Hill, one of America's oldest and most significant burying grounds. Tours will be offered on the first Saturday of every month at 1 pm (excepting January); meet at the top of the Hill.

No reservations are required for individuals and families. Participants may traverse steep and slippery slopes; please wear appropriate shoes. Severe weather may cancel tour; updates will be posted on the Plymouth Antiquarian Society Facebook page.

Support The Phil

Please support The Phil and our mission to connect community through music.
The Phil has been serving our community through live performances and outreach programs, demonstrating how music and the arts can have a lasting effect on those we serve.  Programs like the orchestra's in-school Instrument Immersion program and the High School Choral Consortium Concert provide potentially life-altering experiences for hundreds of young people.  Since ticket revenues cover a small portion of concert costs, let alone a full season, we need your help.  Significant support from the greater community is the only way to continue offering excellent music and music outreach programs.
Giving is easy!  Secure online giving is available in addition to mail, phone and in person donations.  Check out the support opportunities below to see which one is right for you.
Annual Fund - Support the general operations and artistic excellence of the Phil with a gift of any size.
Sponsorships - Gain high visibility with an upscale audience of music lovers by sponsoring a Phil concert or special benefit event.
Advertise - Ads in our program books put your message in front of a discerning audience while helping to support a worthy cause.

Pilgrim Festival Chorus Presents Glorious Victory

Pilgrim Festival Chorus (PFC), the region’s principal community chorus, presents a spring concert, Glorious Victory, on Saturday, April 23 at 7:30 pm, and Sunday, April 24 at 4 pm at The Church of the Pilgrimage (COTP), 8 Town Square in Plymouth. The chorus is conducted by Music Director William B. Richter and accompanied by orchestra and Assistant Director Elizabeth Chapman Reilly on organ.

The two very different works being presented are the Lord Nelson Mass, one of Joseph Haydn's greatest choral works, and A Great and Glorious Victory by contemporary composer Jonathan Willcocks. These works commemorate one of the most iconic heroes of the late 18th century, Horatio Nelson. Nelson is recognized for his service as a British naval commander and considered a national hero, famous for his naval victories against the French during the Napoleonic Wars.

While Haydn's work is well known, it has not been performed on the South Shore for a number of years. PFC's performance of the Willcocks piece, commissioned to mark the bicentenary of the Battle of Trafalgar, is the first in the region following a rare few in the United States, including one Carnegie Hall performance directed by the composer himself. Drawing its text from contemporary accounts, hymns, the Book of Common Prayer, and the Latin Requiem Mass, it was first performed in England on November 5, 2005.

As companion pieces, these works complement each other. Haydn uses the musical language of his time and employs a solo quartet to set the text with sensitivity and exuberance. Willcocks uses both simple harmonic language and complex dissonance to tell a story that includes a battle scene and a hurricane.

Since 1999, PFC has delighted South Shore audiences with classical programming. The group of over 70 singers of all adult ages is dedicated to authentic choral singing. In addition to annual spring concerts, PFC generally presents a Christmas-themed concert in December, as well as a Messiah singalong, and summer concerts with pops-style programming.

Tickets are $20.00 for adults, $18.00 for senior citizens and $15.00 for students over 14. Children under the age of 14 are admitted free. Advance tickets may be purchased online at www.pilgrimfestivalchorus.org; and from PFC members. To reserve tickets by phone, please call Gail at (781) 826-8416. Complimentary refreshments will be served in the church hall immediately following the performance. For more information on the concert or PFC, please visit their website at www.pilgrimfestivalchorus.org, or follow Pilgrim Festival Chorus on Facebook.
