Plymouth Antiquarian Society May Burial Hill Tour

First Saturdays on Burial Hill
Join Us on May 7th

Boston vs. Local Styles in Gravestones

Burial Hill has some of the finest examples for comparing the differences in materials and carvings between Boston-made gravestones and locally-made burial markers during the 18th century. Stephen O'Neill, Executive Director of the Hanover Historical Society & Senior Lecturer at Suffolk University, explains the distinctions and how rural stones created a local style in imitation of Boston gravestones.

Boston vs. Local Styles in Gravestones is part of Burial Hill: History in Progress, a free program that will continue through the year 2020. Launched independently in 2011 by the Plymouth Antiquarian Society, the Burial Hill series is now a collaborative program with the Pilgrim Society & Pilgrim Hall Museum. Each year, we will present a series of history expeditions on Burial Hill, one of America's oldest and most significant burying grounds. Tours will be offered on the first Saturday of every month at 1 pm (excepting January); meet at the top of the Hill.

No reservations are required for individuals and families. Participants may traverse steep and slippery slopes; please wear appropriate shoes. Severe weather may cancel tour; updates will be posted on the Plymouth Antiquarian Society Facebook page.

Trip to See Mayflower II Restoration in Mystic Seaport

Join our friends from Plimoth Plantation on May 6 for a unique, behind-the-scenes trip to Mystic Seaport to visit Mayflower II while she is undergoing the second phase of her restoration work at the renowned Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard. The ship is scheduled to return to Plymouth Harbor in June for the season, so this is a wonderful opportunity to see first-hand the incredible craftsmanship of both museums' skilled shipwrights and maritime artisans while she is still at Mystic Seaport.

This is a rare opportunity to learn about the art of wooden shipbuilding and restoration and how Plimoth Plantation is keeping it alive in collaboration with Mystic Seaport. This multi-year, multi-million preservation project, once fully funded, will ensure that Mayflower II can continue to fulfill her educational mission and serve as an enduring symbol of hope and freedom.

American Pennies for Hunger

After the brutal winter that the northeast endured last year, this year has been relatively mild and it already feels like "spring has sprung". Although the weather has improved, 1in 9 people in Eastern Massachusetts still do not to know where their next meal will come from. APFH continues to be committed to its' mission but we can't do it without your help.

Last year, APFH donated $18,000 to 21 Emergency Food Providers in Southeastern MA, bringing our total donations since our inception to over $113,000! Our goal is to alleviate hunger for adults, children, seniors and veterans in need. This year, we have already donated $1,700 primarily due to a very successful penny drive at The West Elementary School in Plymouth and change collected at The Pinehill's Market in Plymouth. Our donation account balance is currently below $100. Please give what you can.

You can donate through our web site at www.americanpenniesforhunger.org or simply mail a check to:

American Pennies for Hunger Inc.
PO Box 6272
Plymouth, MA 02362

Thank you for all you have done and continue to do for all of those at risk.

Happy Spring!
