Share your memorabilia

The Mayflower Society House, located at 4 Winslow St., is sponsoring a “Christmas 1943” open house from 1 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, and Sunday, Dec. 8.

On the 70th anniversary of this pivotal year in World War II, the Society House will feature memorabilia recognizing the sacrifices of our servicemen and women overseas, as well as on the home front. During the war, the House was the Plymouth headquarters of the American Red Cross. Residents are encouraged to visit and share their memories of wartime Plymouth. Period music will be featured and light refreshments served.

The Society invites Plymouth residents who may wish to share memorabilia for display to call Judy MacDonald, curator, at 508-746-1508, or Walter Powell, executive director, at 508-746-3188, ext. 29.

Giving Thanks - A letter from the Executive Director of Plimouth Plantation

Dear Friends of Plimoth Plantation,

Bright yellow leaves fall from the trees and bright yellow school busses fill our parking lots – it’s autumn at Plimoth Plantation! The museum is bustling with schoolchildren discovering the 17th century. Each year, we welcome 100,000 schoolchildren, 8,000 of whom participate in free field trips through Foundations for Kids. In this season of giving thanks and family celebrations, we express our gratitude to the many supporters who helped Plimoth Plantation to accomplish so much this year.

Overcoming logistical and financial challenges, Mayflower II triumphantly returned from an extended period in dry dock for urgently needed repairs. It was a moving and memorable experience to see so many people on the waterfront, waiting to welcome the ship home to Plymouth. While we made progress on her list of repairs, Mayflower II will need additional renovation and continued support to remain sail worthy and shipshape for 2020, the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims’ arrival.

Also near the waterfront, the Plimoth Grist Mill has been a wonderful addition to the Museum, expanding the Museum’s presence in downtown Plymouth and adding another facet to our interpretation of 17th-century New England.

The Wampanoag Indigenous Program celebrated its 40th anniversary this year. In addition to celebrating this important milestone here on the Wampanoag Homesite, the WIP staff worked closely with the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) in Washington, DC to construct a mishoon to add to NMAI’s collection. A wonderful video was created by PacTV to commemorate the occasion.

\On our main campus, we will break ground this winter to expand and enhance the Craft Center. Thanks to several grants, including major support from the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund, we will renovate the building to include new artisan spaces, a wood-fired oven bakery, and upgraded visitor amenities. I invite you to visit and explore all the revitalized Craft Center has to offer in 2014. (Re-opening date to be determined, please check our website for updates!)

In September, 300 tourism industry professionals volunteered their time and hands-on efforts through Tourism Cares. These enthusiastic volunteers rebuilt 500 feet of the Palisade, painted the Hornblower Visitor Center, restored the steps from the Visitor Center to the Pavilion, and more. Their impact was enormous, and we are deeply appreciative.

Finally, I would like to thank you for your participation this year as a visitor, member, volunteer or donor. We truly could not fulfill the museum’s educational mission without your generous and loyal support. I hope that among your priorities in giving this year you will consider a tax-deductible year end gift to Plimoth Plantation. Together we can continue to tell the pivotal story of the Nation’s earliest foundations and preserve our intangible cultural heritage.

On behalf of all of us at Plimoth Plantation, I wish you and your family a joyous Thanksgiving.
With appreciation,

Ellie Donovan
Executive Director

Pilgrim Festival Chorus Presents Messiah Sing in Plymouth

Pilgrim Festival Chorus (PFC), the region’s principal community choral group, will host a Messiah Sing, a sing-through of Handel’s masterpiece, on Sunday, December 22, at 3 pm at The Church of the Pilgrimage, 8 Town Square in Plymouth. PFC’s Music Director, William B. Richter, will conduct, accompanied by Elizabeth Chapman Reilly, organist.

Messiah Sings, popular in this area for at least 40 years, employ the audience as the chorus. For choral music enthusiasts, a Messiah Sing is considered a necessary part of the holiday season each year. This Sing will consist of Part I (the Christmas portion) and the Hallelujah! Chorus, possibly the best known choral piece in the western world.
Instrumental accompaniment will be supplied by the church’s impressive Woodbury-Roche pipe organ. Soloists will be drawn from the PFC membership, many of whom are professionally trained.

Tickets are priced at $10.00 and are available at the door. Scores are available to borrow, or attendees are welcome to bring their own. Funds raised from the event support the PFC's yearly operating expenses. For more information on the concert or PFC, please visit www.pilgrimfestivalchorus.org, or follow Pilgrim Festival Chorus on Facebook.

About Pilgrim Festival Chorus
The Pilgrim Festival Chorus is a volunteer, not-for-profit, auditioned singing group dedicated to the performance of choral music; to give public and private concerts; to provide a musically educational opportunity to its members and the public; and to encourage and promote choral singing and the appreciation of good choral music. Bournedale Function Facility Expands With New Pool Building

Bournedale Function Facility, the region’s award winning custom events destination since 1937, has completed the addition of a new building on their expansive property, housing a luxury indoor pool, jacuzzi and locker rooms and showers. The new facility was designed to provide a variety of new programs and events to the public, and supplement the services to Bournedale’s premier residential boys summer camp, serving young men from around the world for more than 50 years. The public is welcome to tour the new facility at a community open house on Sunday, November 24, from 1 to 4 pm, at 110 Valley Road, Plymouth.

“We’ve been excited for the debut of this new addition for more than a year,” says Arnie Gerson, second generation managing owner of the property. “Our property offers many beautiful vistas, top-notch facilities and cutting edge amenities. This new addition opens the door to offering local residents as well as visiting guests a new myriad of programs. We’re proud of the results of the beautiful design of the structure, and the intense planning that went into making a spectacular addition to our grounds.”

Bournedale Function Facility encompasses 15 acres of private waterfront facilities and abundant amenities in South Plymouth. A sandy lakefront beach sets the stage for the adjacent reception hall complete with indoor/outdoor dining spaces. Overnight accommodations welcome over 100 guests to casual country housing on site. The level of excellence is taken seriously by the staff and management as the area’s destination wedding site, also home to private corporate outings, reunions and retreats, business and political functions, educational programs and special events. The new independent indoor heated pool facility boasts an 8-person Jacuzzi, men’s and women’s restrooms, changing rooms and showers, and a vaulted ceiling with two walls of glass sliding doors overlooking the grounds and picturesque Great Herring Pond. The structure is also located adjacent to the campus’ indoor gym, tennis and basketball courts and athletic fields, which can be utilized in tandem to the pool facilities.

New programs are currently being developed for the pool, including private Red Cross certified swim lessons, water aerobic classes, member open swim, scuba certification classes, and more. To complement these offerings, a nearby building has been renovated for the addition of yoga classes, massage services and therapy programs. As an independent facility, the pool can also be privately rented to house birthday parties or special occasions, and “stay-cation” options are in the works to allow local residents to utilize the property as a closeby “home away from home”.

The community open house is open to the public, no reservation necessary. Guests will be welcome to tour the grounds and new facility, enjoy refreshments, and learn more about the new aquatic, yoga and spa programs available. For more information visit www.capefunctions.com, call 508-888-2634, or follow The Bournedale Function Facility on Facebook.
