In 2013, West Plymouth Youth Basketball Inc., providing youth basketball to Plymouth area residents ages 6-13 for over 40 years, formed a scholarship committee to provide higher education scholarship grants to league players. The first scholarships were awarded in July 2012 in the amount of $7,500. The scholarships were awarded by the WPYB Inc. scholarship committee, which is comprised of Don Correa of Plymouth (league president), Chris Pratt (Plymouth schoolteacher and program director), Cheri Tavernelli (PCIS teacher and league administrator), Bill Mitchell (associate chancellor of finance UMass Dartmouth and league referee) and Bob Nash (league referee).

This year a total of $3,000 was awarded. The remaining scholarships were awarded by lottery. All players who participated in the league were permitted to apply. The merit scholarship awards were as follows: $500 each to Nick Marinos, Ryan Marinos, Kyle Plant and B. Curtis Sheppard Jr. The lottery scholarship awards were as follows: $250 each to Joshua Bierut, Noah Chiano, Zachary Cormier and Chris McGloin.

Plymouth & Brockton launches new Plymouth to Providence bus service

Plymouth & Brockton Street Railway Company (www.p-b.com), a family-owned and operated transportation company that has served the region for more than 125 years, today announced plans to launch a new route for commuters and travelers that will run between Plymouth, MA and Providence, RI, starting July 14.

Christopher Anzuoni, Plymouth & Brockton (P&B) Vice President, said that the route has been in the planning phase for nearly a year. During this time, they have been in contact with a number of state and local authorities as they finalized their plans for the new East-West route. As part of the launch, P&B has placed in service a new Commuter Coach, provided through BusPlus+, funded by a Federal Transit Administration grant that is overseen by MassDOT’s Rail and Transit Division.

The route will run daily, with the first bus leaving Plymouth’s Memorial Hall at 9 a.m. and arriving in Providence at 10:30. The route begins at Memorial Hall, and stops at Park & Ride at Exit 5, Plymouth, near the Information Center. From there the route stops at the Leona Drive Rotary/Campanelli Business Park, Middleboro. The next stop is the Park & Ride at the Galleria Mall, Taunton; then to Somerset, where the stop is at the Park & Ride at the Slades Ferry Avenue; and arriving at Kennedy Plaza in Providence.

A return bus leaves Providence at 11 a.m. and arrives in Plymouth at 12:30 p.m. A second round-trip leaves Plymouth at 4 p.m. and arrives in Providence at 5:30 p.m., and the return trip leaves Providence at 6:30 p.m., arriving in Plymouth at 8 p.m.

Fares for one-way travel from Plymouth to Providence are $16; for round-trip, $29. P&B will also offer commuter booklets. As the route gets underway, tickets can be purchased directly from the driver as the bus makes its stops. Other fares from Plymouth to Middleboro, $6 one way; to Taunton, $9 and to Somerset, $12. Round trip, to Middleboro, $11; Taunton, $16; and Somerset, $22.

Anzuoni noted that the East-West link will offer travelers other distinct advantages, in that at Providence there are connecting bus routes and AMTRAK for those who wish to go on to New York. He anticipates that there will be extended interest in the ride from Providence to Plymouth also, as Plymouth is a tourist destination during the summer.

“As Route 44 becomes more heavily traveled, we have long believed that bus transportation can help people who travel that corridor on a regular or occasional basis,” he said, adding, “We have developed a route that we believe hits the major areas between Plymouth and Providence and look forward to serving the public with this new route.”

Travelers will enjoy the comfort of a new MotorCoach Industries (MCI) bus, a state-of-the-art vehicle designed with greater legroom, state-of-the-art restrooms, Wi-Fi and 110 volt outlets for passenger convenience. The MCI model is designed for highway speeds, featuring a touring-level interior and wheelchair accessibility. The coaches offer ergonomically designed Kiel seats, and will accommodate 51 passengers for increased commuter comfort.

Wetlands Restoration: Tidmarsh Farms

Wetlands Restoration: Tidmarsh Farms
with Glorianna Davenport & Alex Hackman
July 20th ~ 1-3 pm
FREE for Members/$15 for Not-Yet-Members

Tidmarsh Farms is a 577-acre property located in Manomet Village, about 5-miles south of Plimoth Plantation. For over 100 years the farms (there were 2 of them) focused on producing cranberries. In 2010, through a series of actions, the owners agreed to transform 250-acres of the property located between Bartlett and Beaver Dam Roads into a nature sanctuary. The first step in this transformation was to realize a large-scale wetlands restoration project (2015-2016). In this presentation, Glorianna Davenport, a Trustee of the Farms, and Alex Hackman, Project Manager for the Massachusetts Division of Ecological Restoration (DER) will talk about the landscape, assessment of factors limiting natural recovery and the ecological restoration goal.

Presenters: Glorianna Davenport is a Trustee of Tidmarsh Farms, Inc. and co-founder of Living Observatory, a new center for documenting, interpreting and experiencing a landscape in transition. Trained as a documentary filmmaker, Glorianna began her research and teaching career at MIT in 1977. A founding member of M.I.T.’s Media Laboratory, Davenport’s research focused on how to transform video into a mainstream digital and social medium. Today, Glorianna continues to champion media innovations that will allow people, individually and collectively, to better understand the relationships between ecological processes, human lifestyle choices, and adaptation of the natural world to climate change.

Alex Hackman is an aquatic ecologist and project manager for the Massachusetts Division of Ecological Restoration (DER). He has a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies from Tufts University, and a Master’s of Science from the University of Vermont. Alex has managed dam removals and other river/wetland restoration projects for the past 7 years, and has been involved in all aspects of data collection, engineering design, permitting, and fundraising, for the Tidmarsh Farms project. He assisted the Town of Plymouth to design and implement the Eel River Headwater Restoration Project (completed in 2010), a first of its kind effort to restore a retired cranberry farm in Massachusetts. Alex is a self-described nature lover, active member of the Society for Ecological Restoration, and advocate for bringing theory and science together for effective restoration design.

FISH STORIES: Plymouth 400 tournament begins July 12

The trout fishing on local ponds has slowed down, but the stripers
are providing some great action in Plymouth and Race Point. The Cape Cod
Canal is producing some big bass, early in the morning or late at
night. The mackerel are still plentiful at the east end, and the squid
have been coming in at night.
