WPYB scholarship grants

In 2013, West Plymouth Youth Basketball Inc., providing youth basketball to Plymouth area residents ages 6-13 for over 40 years, formed a scholarship committee to provide higher education scholarship grants to league players. The first scholarships were awarded in July 2012 in the amount of $7,500. The scholarships were awarded by the WPYB Inc. scholarship committee, which is comprised of Don Correa of Plymouth (league president), Chris Pratt (Plymouth schoolteacher and program director), Cheri Tavernelli (PCIS teacher and league administrator), Bill Mitchell (associate chancellor of finance UMass Dartmouth and league referee) and Bob Nash (league referee).

This year a total of $3,000 was awarded. The larger of the scholarships are merit scholarships based upon the criteria of the player’s participation in the league for a minimum of six years, sportsmanship, attendance at a school of higher education and financial need. The remaining scholarships were awarded by lottery. All players who participated in the league were permitted to apply. The merit scholarship awards were as follows: $500 each to Nick Marinos, Ryan Marinos, Kyle Plant and B. Curtis Sheppard Jr. The lottery scholarship awards were as follows: $250 each to Joshua Bierut, Noah Chiano, Zachary Cormier and Chris McGloin.

WPYB Inc. is a nonprofit corporation registered with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ attorney general’s charitable division. Players may receive more than one scholarship and remain eligible throughout each year of WPYB participation.
